Digne borrows its name from Victor Hugo's Les Miserable. It bears the name of the town where the novel's protagonist Jean Valjean encounters Monsignor Bienvenu, the Bishop of Digne. The kindness and generosity that Valjean was shown in Digne marked the critical juncture in his transformation from a convict without hope to a man committed to the highest service to humanity. In adopting this name, we firmly believes in the transformative ability that an education in politics and civics can have on empowering individuals to shape their communities regardless of circumstance.

The inspiration to start this project stems from my experience in community history. In high school, I began a local history podcast with the Avon Historical Society. In the process, I was given the opportunity to sit down and have some of the most meaningful conversations of my life with leaders of local organizations who have selflessly dedicated their time and energies to work that hopes to make their community just that much better, not for fame or renown, but because it is the right thing to do. It is the passion of these everyday heroes that has filled me with a firm belief in the extraordinary power of common people. With Digne, I hope to pass this forward and provide the tools and support for all people to become meaningfully invested in their communities.

Eira Prakash is a student at Barnard College of Columbia University, majoring in Political Science, Human Rights, and Sociology. She has been involved with local and town politics since being a poll checker at the age of 16, and has worked at her local registrars office as well as on a variety of local town campaigns. Eira believes that local community engagement is a necessary cornerstone to genuine representation for all people. Through Digne, she is excited to show people how easy and necessary it is to do big things in one's community!
